I highly recommend reading through the list of steps and recommendations below and embracing them, as you prepare for a Reiki class, group experience, or 1-on-1 session.

In part, I attribute the depth of profundity of my very first Reiki training to the fact that my teacher shared the steps below with me, and I followed through. My healthy holistic lifestyle has powerfully enhanced every subsequent Reiki session, group experience, and class I have received or given.

I have noticed that the people drawn to me as a healer/teacher are often already on a health and spiritual journey. The steps below may come natural to you.

If the steps below are a stretch for you, I encourage you to pick a few to focus on. Extra self-care before receiving Reiki will benefit you greatly and create momentum that will carry you into a brighter, healthier future. By signing up for a class, experience, or session, you have given permission for Reiki to start helping you make healthy changes. You will receive the support you need to adopt healthy habits.

The less work Reiki has to do in detoxing you physically, the more subtle, refined spiritual experiences and expanded perceptions, you are likely to notice.

The steps below are written specifically for preparing for a Reiki attunement, placement, or ignition. They will be helpful even if you are receiving Reiki in a group experience or 1-on-1 session, in which an attunement will not be given. I recommend taking these steps before receiving Reiki in any form. See my special note about step #2.

The following is an excerpt from Reiki: The Healing Touch, First and Second Degree Manual, Appendix C, by William Lee Rand. It is used with permission from the author.

"A Reiki attunement is a process of empowerment that connects you to the unlimited source of Reiki energy. (In Holy Fire® classes, the attunement has evolved into Placements and Ignitions, which accomplish the same thing with improved results. These preparations also apply to Placements and Ignitions.)

During the attunement, and for a time after, changes will be made by the attunement energy to enable you to channel Reiki. These changes take place metaphysically not only in your energy system and also in the physical body. An emotional as well as a physical toxic release can take place as part of this clearing process.

In order to improve the results you receive during the attunement, a process of purification is recommended. This will allow the attunement energies to work more efficiently and create greater benefits for you. The following steps are optional. Follow them if you feel guided to do so.

  1. Refrain from eating meat or fowl for three days prior to the attunement. These foods often contain drugs in the form of penicillin and female hormones, and toxins in the form of pesticides and heavy metals, that make your system sluggish and throw it out of balance.

  2. Consider a water or juice fast for one to three days, especially if you already are a vegetarian or have experience with fasting.*

  3. Minimize your use of coffee and caffeine drinks or stop completely. They create imbalances in the nervous and endocrine systems. Use no caffeine drinks on class days.

  4. Use no alcohol for at least three days prior to the attunement.

  5. Minimize or stop using sweets. Eat no chocolate.

  6. If you smoke, cut back, and smoke as little as possible on the day of the attunement.

  7. Meditate for half an hour each day for at least a week using a style you know or simply spend this time in silence.

  8. Reduce or eliminate time watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading newspapers.

  9. Go for quiet walks, spend time with nature, and get moderate exercise.

  10. Give more attention to the subtle impressions and sensations within and around you; contemplate their meaning.

  11. Release all anger, fear, jealousy, hate, worry, etc. up to the light. Create a sacred space within and around you.

While these steps are optional, they will improve your health. They will also help you have a more meaningful experience during class by helping you open to the more subtle and refined levels of Reiki energy."

*Taylor’s Special Note about #2: a well-balanced raw vegan diet based on fresh fruits, vegetables, and greens with a low but adequate amount of fat is a great option if you still want to eat and facilitate a gentle detox. This is an excellent choice for a Reiki maintenance diet. If this piques your interest, definitely check out my Flower of Healing™ offerings.

Water

Be sure to hydrate well in the time leading up to and following a Reiki session, group experience, or class. Have plenty of pure water handy. Reiki is much like massage therapy, in that toxins are released. To facilitate this process, extra hydration will help you flush out the toxins and prevent uncomfortable detox symptoms. If you notice you are thirstier than normal after a Reiki session or during/after a Reiki class or group experience, know that this is normal. Simply support your body’s healing process, and drink more water.

Other Preparations, Ceremonial Space Creation & Music

Ensure that you have a cozy, quiet space to be in for the duration of your session, group experience, or class. Secure childcare and tend to any other obligations beforehand.

Eliminate distractions. Place your phone on airplane mode. Ensure a good internet connection, and have headphones handy, just in case.

Be prepared to be fully present. Wear comfortable clothing that makes you feel good. Have a place to lie down, let go, and receive. This time is for you.

These tips are entirely optional, and can be quite fun! If you feel guided to do so (and it doesn’t create extra stress or worry), create a Reiki space for yourself with elements that soothe you, such as fresh flowers, candles, incense, crystals, stones, essential oils, low or natural lighting, comfy blankets, yoga mat, your favorite pillow, a special Reiki journal, colorful writing utensils, and so forth. Include anything that will help you create a sacred, ceremonial space, unique to your authentic tastes and preferences, for you to receive the gift of Reiki.

If you want to play music, have it queued up and ready to play on another device. For example, if attending class on Zoom meeting on your laptop, have your music ready to play on your phone.

Optional Reiki Music: Julie True Music, Music to Journal by, Vol. I, Healing Presence. YouTube link: https://bit.ly/3wnFKyL

When choosing music for Reiki, understand that the music will influence your experience. Choose soothing, calm, uplifting, inspiring music without lyrics. I also recommend no music if your space is very quiet, or you have the great blessing of nature sounds around you.

Final Thoughts

These preparations will ensure you maximize your benefits from receiving a Reiki session, group experience, or class.

The more you can embrace these self-care habits and consciously prepare for Reiki, the better! Reiki will support you in making time and space for you.

Diligent self-care not only produces radiant health and a long, healthy life, but also creates a trusting, loving relationship to your human body and your pure human nature.

Reiki unifies your pure human nature and divine nature within your human body. By making self-care a daily practice, you show your commitment to play an active, empowered role in this process. Reiki will meet you there, and take you beyond your expectations of what is possible for your growth and well-being into the limitless, infinite possibilities.
